CHAPTER TEN
Margaret was happier than sheâd been in years, even years before losing Bartlet. She had a strong affection for Katherine, her husband and their kids. She felt lighter with Katherine around, her youthful energy brought something Margaretâs life had been sorely lacking. And though she had treated them all to that lavish dinner the night before, she was grateful for the company and the opportunity for a fun night out. So when she said she wanted to show her appreciation by buying them all new clothes for their appearance before the president the next day, she truly meant it.
After several modest refusals, she finally broke their stubborn spirits and had Laurence take them to her favorite tailor, an Italian called Rossini, with a lovely little shop right across the street from Margaretâs own church, St. Peterâs, when she used to attend regularly.
Rossini had a lot of goods on hand, dresses that only needed to be tailored, pants with cuffs and waists which need only be adjusted. And what he needed to make by hand, he and his expert staff, also his nephews, could have done in just a few hours.
Ida looked resplendent in a pale blue domed skirt, with flounces underneath. Her bodice had a panel over the shoulders that were gathered into a blunt point at the slightly dropped waist. But Margaret suggested a smart new jacket bodice buttoned in front, worn over a chemisette.
Ida felt like a doll, like a girl in a fairy tale, transformed into a magical princess and preparing for her appearance at the grand ball before the king of all the land! Margaret and Katherine smiled to see Ida turn and twirl and curtsy in the mirror, all girlish glee.
Katherine herself got a similar dress, with a low-brimmed hat festooned with lovely red ribbons to bring out her own red curls.
Horatio, on the other hand, seemed distinctly uncomfortable in his new suit, gray with black trim, the cravat distinctly sophisticated, and not to Horatioâs liking. He tried to smile, but more and more he felt heâd be more comfortable bare-chested and on horseback than in this getup.
Gideon was fitted for his own suit first, and excused himself to cross the street and visit the ornate Gothic cathedral of St. Peterâs, to confer with another priest and rejuvenate his spiritual reserves. This was the first Easter Sunday since he became reverend that he wouldn't be giving a service, and the first of his life that he wouldnât be attending one. And as much as he played it off as inconsequential for Idaâs benefit, in truth he was saddened by it, and wanted to commune with God in His own house at least once during this wild and wooly visit.
The church was huge, a catholic tribute to the restorative powers of the Christ and of the Virgin Mary, Herself not part of Gideonâs Holy Trinity. And the statues of the saints, not found in his own church, were stone masterpieces, delicately carved in marble, robes flowing as if they were silk, lifeless skin as smooth and supple as the real thing.
